Challenge
Severe flooding in Niger in late summer of 2019 killed 57 people and affected 211,000 persons. These increased flooding phenomena reinforce the problems of population displacement already present in the region, and are devastating for the agricultural activities.
Innovative solution
The partners tested a solution combining water level sensors and satellite data to develop a digital model for simulating floods and forecasting droughts. The objective is to be able to better monitor the Niger River and improve resource management.
Impact
- Anticipation and prevention of floods to save lives and limit population movements
- Preservation of annual harvests for communities, which can thus increase their resilience to the impacts of climate change

Targeted Sustainable Development Goals
-
Sources of income for local communities are preserved through anticipation of flood risks.
-
Local agricultural production is also preserved through anticipation of flood risks.
-
The project aims to make the living areas situated around the river safer by preventing flood-related deaths and increasing the resilience of vulnerable communities.
-
The gathered information helps enhance the resilience of hundreds of thousands of people against the increased flooding of the Niger River.
