Challenge
Kosovo’s waste recycling infrastructure remains critically underdeveloped, with a national recycling rate of only 2–3%. In Podujeva and parts of Prishtina—especially the industrial zones—public waste operators generally do not provide categorised waste collection for businesses or remote residential areas. This has led to vast volumes of recyclable materials being dumped, rather than reintegrated into the circular economy.
Innovative solution
The project introduces a business model efficiency upgrade by replacing semi-manual systems with semi-automated machinery to press, sort, and store recyclable materials. Natyra operates as an upstream logistics provider, preparing recyclable paper, cardboard, and plastic (PET, nylon, detergent bottles) for downstream recyclers and exporters. It also expands service delivery into underserved industrial zones where municipal waste companies are absent, enabling access to recycling services for hundreds of new businesses.
Impact
- 4,500 new people with access to recycling services
- 67,750 kg additional recyclable paper collected per month
- 16,500 kg additional recyclable plastic collected per month
- 299.8 tons of additional CO₂ avoided per year
- 8 new direct jobs created (including 1 woman and 3 persons from minorities)
- 16 new indirect jobs created
