Challenge
In Rwanda, 9.5 million people live in rural areas, far from bank branches which are mainly concentrated in urban centres. Many citizens remain excluded from digital services due to a lack of devices, connectivity, or digital skills. Agency banking is highly fragmented, while float management is costly, time-consuming, and ties up capital. For banks, maintaining an agent network is expensive, with uncertain returns on investment.
Innovative solution
RTN developed ITEME platform that connects banks, agents, and citizens. For banks, it provides a plug-and-play solution that strengthens their existing networks and integrates new services to reach more clients while reducing operating costs. For banking agents, it offers a single integrated system that lowers costs, saves time, and increases revenues. Agents also receive training to enhance their banking knowledge and acquire new business skills. For citizens, ITEME creates a one-stop shop for banking services, eliminating the need to travel long distances or queue, saving both time and money.
Impact
- 1,410 additional banking agents earning income through the ITEME platform
- 435 additional agents increasing their revenues through earned commissions
- 2,000 agents trained in banking services and new business skills
- Access to digital and financial services, even in remote areas for 45,000 + new individuals
