Challenge
Senegalese agriculture relies heavily on imported chemical fertilisers, whose high cost place a significant burden on farms. At the same time, local production of animal protein for livestock farming (pigs, poultry and fish) remains insufficient. This shortfall leads to a strong dependence on costly imports, particularly fishmeal and soy, whose protein content is relatively low (around 40%).
Innovative solution
The project offers a sustainable response to these challenges by using local organic waste from Servair and the Thiaroye market through the farming of black soldier flies.
The larvae, fed exclusively on this organic waste, enable the simultaneous production of high‑protein feed for animal nutrition and organic fertilisers for agriculture.
The key innovation lies in the unique combination of local organic waste bioconversion with the creation of two complementary strategic resources. This dual usage fully optimises the value chain by unlocking the full potential of waste, going beyond traditional approaches that typically focus on a single end product.
Impact
- Improved livelihoods for 232 people
- 25 new clients onboarded
- 280 tonnes of fertiliser and 10 tonnes of protein commercialised
- 35 direct jobs created

Targeted Sustainable Development Goals
-
232 people improve their livelihoods.
-
35 jobs are created through the construction of the biofactory.
-
The project collects organic waste and reuses it within its production process.
